Discover the Best in Addiction Treatment and Recovery

Searching for a rehab center near you that offers the kind of treatments that you will need to quit abusing drugs or alcohol can be a little confusing and leave you frustrated. And even if you use a rehab assistant like us to find an addiction recovery program that matches your specific wants and needs to end your addiction, you will still need to know what the various treatments are to at least understand what you will experience within the program that you eventually choose.

Although they may sound similar in definition to some people, treatment programs and rehab treatments are different things. In fact, treatment programs are developed out of rehab treatments. Rehab treatments include a variety of therapies, outdoor activities, creative activities, support groups, and more. On the other hand, some notable treatment programs include things like Alcoholics Anonymous (and other 12-step substance abuse programs), dual diagnosis care, and detox as well as inpatient, outpatient, and partial hospitalization addiction rehab programs.

Finding help when you or a loved one is fighting an addiction can be hard enough on its own, and not knowing what the options actually mean can lead to even more difficulties. There are many assumptions about what each of the following major types of treatment do, but some clarification can go a long way:

  • Relapse Prevention
  • 12 Step Recovery Programs
  • Non-12 Step Recovery Programs
  • Dual Diagnosis
  • Addiction Counseling
  • Aftercare

Relapse prevention is conducted via addiction rehab aftercare and is used to keep an ex-addict from returning to the substance that they were addicted to. Aftercare usually involves support groups and some form of therapy or counseling as well as an agreed-upon road map that should keep the patient sober as long as the plan is followed.

12-step recovery programs give addicts a set path that will lead to a lifetime of sobriety. The most famous of these is the Alcoholics Anonymous program, which has helped millions of people break out of the grip of alcohol use disorder. Though not all 12-step recovery programs are the same, nearly all of them have the addicts apologize to a person or the people hurt by the addiction. Likewise, most twelve step addiction recovery programs include some level of religiosity.

Non-12 step recovery programs are any rehab program that doesn’t use a 12-step system.

A dual diagnosis is when someone not only has an addiction to a substance, but they have a corresponding mental illness as well. Cases of dual diagnosis can be especially difficult to treat since the mental illness and the substance abuse can be cyclical. People who have a dual diagnosis that quit abusing a substance will have a more difficult time avoiding relapse, which makes aftercare that much more important for these patients.

Addiction counseling comes in a variety of methods. The most popular forms of these include cognitive behavioral therapy, family therapy, and support groups. Although there is often a stigma attached to counseling and therapies that patient must have a mental illness of some sort, that’s not always the case. In fact, therapy can be even more helpful for those without a psychological disorder than with one.
